Adnan Khan is the Head of Design of at IA; Saatchi & Saatchi. We got a chance to interview him & get some insights into his career.
Tell us a little about your background and how you got to where you are today
I have studied from an art school for the sheer passion for designing. Art direction always fascinated me whether its designing spaces or hoardings I always enjoyed communication design as it’s a language itself. After my graduation, I started working for ad agencies. Started working at IAL Saatchi & Saatchi as an intern, then after some time went to Adcom for two years and came back to IAL Saatchi & Saatchi where I am currently working. It’s been over 15 years and my love for this business hasn’t gone any less.
What are your job responsibilities?
From managing the department to monitoring day to day work. I also take it as my job responsibility to make succession plans for my team.
Take us through a recent/typical workday.
Since we all are working from home these days, there isn’t any typical workday format as there isn’t any cut-off work hours now. But a typical workday would be from aligning tasks of the day with my team to set deadlines so that work doesn’t clog, and we produce just not quantity but quality as well
What apps, gadgets, or tools can’t you live without?
I am very big on gadgets, apps and all but if I have to pick one then it would be my apple watch as it keeps my personal and professional life all in hand!
Take us through an interesting, unusual, or finicky process you have in place at work.
I truly enjoy food photography, find it very interesting and loves the process of it too. Sometimes when we are travelling we work with international food stylists who don’t have the right knowledge on our cuisine and it gets a bit tough explaining to them what you have in your mind so I generally take their permission and do it myself not only I enjoy it but it saves time too!
Who are the people who help you get things done, and how do you rely on them?
My team is my biggest support and to be very honest support is a small word to describe how much I count on my team and I am fortunate enough to have and lead a team like this
What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made at work, and how did you deal with it?
I like to give leadership to my team members, and I do everything for their own benefit but sometimes plans don’t go your way and you have to face disappointment. There is no specific way of dealing with it, I know if you do things with pure intentions then you don’t have to worry about the challenges that come with it
What advice do you have for people opting for this career?
Love what you do! As much as it sounds cliché, but it truly means a lot to me. The day you start looking at your wristwatch and become restless to go back home, know that your job means nothing to you anymore. I am yet to come across a day in life that makes me feel restless about my job
